How to Use MoneyKhata

Last Updated: 31 October 2026

A quick guide to MoneyKhata's main features. You can use the whole app as a guest — no account needed for anything.

1. Start Recording (No Sign-up Needed)

Open MoneyKhata and start right away. Pick your language from English, Hindi or Maithili anytime in Settings.

Add an Expense or Income

Add an expense or income from the Home dashboard's quick entry:

  1. Tap the amount field — a calculator-style keypad opens, so you can add, subtract and see the running figure while typing.

  2. Choose the category and payment mode (UPI, cash, card and more).

  3. Add a note if you like.

The note becomes the entry's title, so "auto fare to office" reads exactly like you wrote it.

2. Keep Khata (People-wise Ledger)

The Khata tab is your digital bahi-khata.

Add a Person

Type their name, or tap Import from Contacts (the app asks for contact permission only at that moment, and never reads your whole contact list for anything else).

Record "You Gave" or "You Got"

Every entry is part of the ledger, and each person's page always shows the exact balance: how much you will get back or give.

Set the Purpose of a Payment

Set the purpose of a payment so entries stay clear months later.

Collect via UPI

From the person's page, start a UPI collect request with their UPI id.

Set a Payment Reminder

You get a notification when it's time, and reminder notifications never show amounts or names.

3. Set Budgets

In the Budgets area, set a monthly cap per category (like Groceries) and an overall monthly cap.

The bullet rows show how much of each budget is used. Change or remove a cap anytime with a tap on its row.

4. Handle Recurring Dues

Rent, EMI, subscriptions — add them once as a recurring due (monthly, weekly, and so on).

When a due arrives, MoneyKhata shows it and waits for you:

  • Tap Add to post it to the ledger.

  • Tap Skip to let it go this time.

MoneyKhata never posts a due automatically — you are always in control.

5. See Where Your Money Goes

The Reports tab shows monthly trends, category breakdowns and drill-downs — tap a figure to see the entries behind it.

6. Back Up Your Data

Your records live on your phone, so back them up regularly.

  1. Go to Settings → Backup & Restore.

  2. Create a backup file.

  3. Keep your password safe, because it cannot be recovered.

  4. Restore on the same or a new phone from the same screen.

The file is encrypted on your phone (AES-GCM) before it is saved.

Note: Watching a short ad is needed before each create/restore.

7. Lock the App

Turn on App Lock in Settings to protect MoneyKhata with a PIN or your fingerprint/face.

8. Optional Extras (All Off by Default)

Sign in with Google, or Apple on iPhone, and MoneyKhata syncs your ledger across your devices. Guests never sync anything.

AI Assistant

After you explicitly enable it (it stays off until you tick a consent box), you can ask questions about your own records, like "which month did I spend the most?".

Read what it sends on the consent screen before enabling. Turn it off anytime in Settings.

Announcements

Get occasional product news as a push notification.

Daily Spend Reminder

A gentle 9 PM nudge to log today's spends, so no day is forgotten. On by default; off anytime in Settings.

9. Delete Things

Delete a Single Entry

Delete a single entry from its own page whenever you like — the balance updates automatically.

Delete Your Account

Signed-in users can delete their account from:

Settings → Profile & card → Delete account

See the full Account Deletion guide.
